The Elements

From the monumental record The Elements, the experimental/ progressive/ avant atmosphere allows for the fluidity and mastership of sound in rhythm that the great Joe Henderson gives us. On Air, is such a balanced track that draws from the virtuous styles and strict understanding of the metaphysical relationship sound has to the chemistry of the room. The balanced notation of conscious thought as portrayed through a variety of instruments, allows listeners to become trapped in a world created by the insidiously effervescent minds of not only Mr. Henderson, but his current "muse-ical" interest, Alice Coltrane.

The Line Up:

Kenneth Nash (spoken vocals, wood flute, congas, sakara drum, bells, gongs, percussion); Michael White (violin); Charlie Haden (bass); Ndugu Chancler (drums); Baba Daru Oshun (tabla, percussion). Recorded at Village Recorders, Los Angeles, California from October 15-17, 1973. Originally released on Milstone (9053).

Buried Treasure

Des Ark- Day of Prole

This was a limited edition demo she did with Noah Howard, and Beth Hoskins, before she left the band in '04 or'05, with Evan Rowe filling in right after. Couple tracks I had only seen on video sites, at a show, or through word of mouth. And as usual, mind-blowingly creepy, loads of tension, and the ever ongoing interpersonal struggles of scorned women and their relationships. Call it riot girl, call it queercore, call it femmepunk, or whatever fancies your keen intellect for gentrifying music, its pure bliss, and all of the misgivings of naivety.

The Tribe has spoken

*Originally a sort of concept album developed by Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison, after gathering a large handful of musicians who were active in the Detroit music scene in the early 1970's. Wendell played with Sun Ra in the 60's and later went on to start several other music labels post-session work.

I had just heard a remix of the second track "Vibes from the Tribe" at holygrailers that was off the wall, so I decided to do a little research.
